The story is not chronologically built up. The function of the structure is to define the theme of the story right from the start, since that the first person narrative is used, and the protagonist in the beginning of the story is giving the reader an impression of the fact that he is feeling guilty, although the main character does not expose the plot of the story (LANG PASSAGE! PAS PÅ SIMPEL VS. UDVIDET TID)
In the middle of the story, the main character is looking back over his time in Africa and his relationship with Celia. In this part of the story, the reason of the main character’s feeling of guilt is exposed. In the end of the story, the reader is once again following the main character in the present time. The alternation between past and present time, Africa and the main character’s home country is significant to the story because the different places and times symbolize the state of the main character both before and after Celia’s death. Before Celia’s death, when the main character lives in Africa, he is idealistic and free of guilt, while he after Celia’s death, when he is living in his home country, has developed into a disillusioned man who is burdened by his feeling of guilt – his whole life is dominated by his feeling of guilt. The alternation between the two different places and times highlights the development of the main character throughout the story.
