In the beginning the main character feels uncomfortable around Celia. There is a cultural difference between the home country of the main character, where he does not have any servants, and Africa where he suddenly gets a servant. The main character grows fond of Celia throughout time. When he sees that Celia likes to draw, a connection between them takes shape. The love for drawing is one thing, they have in common. This shows that there are similarities between the two different cultures. Even though people from different cultures seem different, they actually have a lot in common. The main character develops a protector feeling towards Celia, as their “relationship” develops. This shows in the following quotation: “Celia was my companion; our elbows on the table never touched. I marveled that with only three years of schooling she could draw so well.” (page 2 line 55-56). They have a mutual understanding for eacht other, since they have the same interest, which builds the foundation of their relationship.
